A violent attack in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries on Monday. Following the incident, local residents protested outside the Chief Minister’s office in Imphal to demand accountability. Tensions in Manipur escalated on Monday morning following a targeted attack in the Khongban Sunurok forest area. Approximately 16 villagers, who were collecting firewood, were ambushed by armed assailants. The incident resulted in three fatalities and left three others hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The deceased were identified as Lairenlakpam Inaobi, Arubam Ronin, and Kshetrimayum Susil.
In the aftermath of the attack, local residents transported the bodies to Imphal, marching toward the Chief Minister’s office in the Babupara area. The arrival of the protesters led to a confrontation with authorities, resulting in the deployment of tear gas by security forces to manage the crowd. The protesters gathered to voice their demand for immediate justice and accountability regarding the breach of safety in the area.
Political leaders have also responded to the situation, with Congress MLA Th Lokeshwar issuing a 24-hour ultimatum for the arrest of those involved in the ambush. Local villagers have expressed ongoing concerns regarding their security and vulnerability to armed groups despite previous government assurances.
The Khamenlok region, which borders Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, has historically remained a volatile area. Since the onset of widespread clashes on May 3, 2023, the region has experienced recurring instances of violence, including a significant incident in June 2023 that claimed nine lives. The current situation remains sensitive as authorities continue to investigate the latest attack and the subsequent breakdown of order in the area.
