Manipur Security Tightened After Arson in Kamjong District

Unidentified groups set 15 abandoned homes on fire in Manipur's Kamjong district, increasing regional instability. Security forces have ramped up surveillance to manage ethnic tensions, while local authorities work to curb the spread of misinformation and recover illegal arms.

Security forces in Manipur have intensified surveillance and patrolling in the Kamjong district following an arson incident this week. Unidentified groups razed 15 abandoned houses in Khoikai village, a location that has remained largely deserted since April due to ongoing ethnic volatility. The incident has prompted an urgent review of law and order protocols in the border districts.

Following the event, the Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga in Ukhrul has raised concerns regarding provocations, attributing the damage to Kuki militants. These accusations, alongside earlier reports of property damage in Patleijang, Lanchah, and Phaimol, are currently under official investigation by the state authorities. For investors and regional observers, such security fluctuations remain a primary monitorable as they directly influence the feasibility of logistics, infrastructure development, and business continuity in the state.

To address the situation, Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh conducted an on-site assessment of the district this week. The state has coordinated with senior leadership from the Border Security Force and Assam Rifles to launch joint operations. Beyond managing communal friction, law enforcement is simultaneously executing counter-insurgency measures. In a recent operation, the Special Commando Unit successfully apprehended Moirangthem Nelson Meitei, a cadre belonging to the People's Liberation Army, in Imphal West.

The state administration is also tackling challenges related to public safety and digital security. Officials have issued formal warnings regarding the circulation of inflammatory social media content that could fuel communal unrest. Additionally, the government continues its drive to recover illicit arms and ammunition looted during the protracted crisis. As state officials marked Police Commemoration Day, they underscored the necessity of local community cooperation to stabilize the region and facilitate a return to normalcy in volatile border areas.
