Life Insurance Firms Face 98,443 Complaints in FY26; Claims Top List

Life insurance companies recorded nearly 98,500 customer grievances in FY2026, with claim-related issues accounting for 41% of all complaints. This high volume of disputes highlights ongoing operational challenges for the sector as it navigates increased regulatory scrutiny from the IRDAI.

In the fiscal year 2025-26, life insurance companies in India registered 98,443 customer complaints, marking the highest volume of grievances among all insurance segments, according to data presented in the Rajya Sabha. General insurance companies closely followed with 95,258 complaints, while health insurers reported 41,658 cases. For investors and policyholders, these figures serve as a critical indicator of customer service efficiency and internal operational standards within the insurance industry.

Claim Settlement and Unfair Practices

The primary driver behind these grievances relates to claim-related issues, which formed the largest category of complaints across the entire sector. Insurers were tasked with addressing over 1.23 lakh claim-related cases, representing more than 41% of total complaints filed during the year. Beyond claims, other significant areas of customer dissatisfaction included reports of unfair business practices and concerns specifically related to policy terms and conditions. The high frequency of these issues underscores the risk of reputational damage and the potential for increased regulatory oversight.

Trends in the First Quarter of FY2027

Recent data for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, covering April 1 to June 30, 2026, reveals a shift in the distribution of pending grievances. General insurers reported the highest count of pending complaints, totaling 3,483. During this same three-month window, life insurers received 24,034 new complaints, while general and health insurers received 26,675 and 12,269 complaints, respectively.

Regulatory Impact and Monitoring

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) continues to maintain a strict stance on service standards. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary confirmed that the regulator possesses the authority to address these grievances effectively. Importantly, the IRDAI has recently increased its power to impose monetary penalties on insurance companies that fail to meet service obligations or engage in unfair practices.

For investors, the key monitorable remains how these insurance companies improve their claim processing times and transparency to reduce the backlog of grievances. Continued high levels of complaints could lead to stricter audits, operational costs associated with addressing regulatory penalties, and potential pressure on brand value in a highly competitive market where customer trust is the primary business driver.
