The city recorded 143.8 mm of rain on the eve of the festival, leading the administration to activate drainage and pumping systems along the 2.6-kilometer route to manage waterlogging and ensure the procession continues without disruption.
Security and Crowd Management
Given the massive turnout, the Odisha state administration has implemented a large-scale security operation. Approximately 13,000 personnel from the Odisha Police, central armed forces, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Coast Guard are currently on duty. This heavy deployment focuses on crowd control, traffic management, and emergency response. These measures are designed to maintain order during the movement of the chariots—Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana—which travel from the 12th-century Jagannath Temple to the Shree Gundicha Temple.
Rituals and Administrative Preparation
The festival's proceedings began with the traditional 'Pahandi' ritual, where the sibling deities were escorted to their respective chariots. Following this, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb performed the 'Chhera Pahanra' ritual, symbolically cleaning the chariots with a golden broom. While the event is centered in Puri, similar processions are also taking place in other parts of India, including states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rain and potential thunderstorms for the region. Because the Rath Yatra relies on massive physical attendance, the administration's ability to manage logistics under severe weather conditions remains the primary monitorable for the duration of the festival.
