Hindustan Zinc Shares Dip Amid Speculation of Govt Stake Sale

Hindustan Zinc stock faced downward pressure on August 25, 2026, amid reports that the government may sell a 1.5% to 2% stake in the firm. While the company recently reported record Q1 FY27 profits, concerns over increased share supply through a potential Offer for Sale (OFS) have dampened investor sentiment. This follows a similar divestment move initiated by the government in Hindustan Copper.

Shares of Hindustan Zinc traded lower on August 25, 2026, as market speculation intensified regarding a potential government stake sale. Reports suggest the government is considering offloading between 1.5% and 2% of its equity in the company, a move that could potentially raise between ₹4,000 crore and ₹5,000 crore.

The downward pressure on the stock reflects typical market sensitivity to large stake sales. An Offer for Sale (OFS) increases the available supply of shares in the secondary market, which often leads to short-term price volatility. The sentiment has been further influenced by the government’s recent announcement regarding an OFS in Hindustan Copper, which coincided with these reports.

While the market is reacting to the news of a potential sale, the company’s underlying business performance remains robust. Hindustan Zinc recently declared its strongest-ever first-quarter results for the 2027 fiscal year. The company posted a net profit of ₹5,469 crore, representing a 145% increase compared to the same period last year. Revenue also hit a record high of ₹13,747 crore, driven by strong operational performance.

Currently, the Government of India holds a 27.92% stake in Hindustan Zinc, while Vedanta Limited remains the majority promoter with a 60.71% holding. The discrepancy between the company’s strong financial growth and the current stock decline highlights how macro events, such as government divestment plans, can temporarily outweigh strong earnings in the short term.

For investors, the immediate focus remains on whether an official exchange filing will confirm the timing and pricing of any such sale. Beyond these divestment plans, the stock’s trajectory is also sensitive to global commodity trends. The prices of zinc and silver, along with currency fluctuations, play a critical role in the company's export-oriented revenue. Investors will be tracking official disclosures for clarity on the quantum and timeline of the potential divestment, which will ultimately dictate the supply-demand balance for the stock in the near term.
