The Gujarat state government has reported that 62 Asiatic lions died due to various illnesses over the past year. The Forest and Environment Ministry confirmed the data in the state Assembly, highlighting the medical challenges faced by the population. Officials are now scaling up veterinary care and vaccination drives to prevent further disease transmission within the habitats.
The Gujarat state government has informed the Assembly that 62 Asiatic lions succumbed to various diseases during the twelve-month period ending July 31, 2026. This data underscores the ongoing health management challenges faced by the protected species in its only natural habitat.
According to the official report, the deaths were caused by a range of medical conditions, including septicaemia, pneumonia, anaemia, and kidney failure. Some animals also passed away due to parasitic infections and complications related to the central nervous system. These findings were confirmed through post-mortem examinations conducted by the state’s forest department.
In response to the mortality figures, the Gujarat Forest and Environment Ministry has launched an intensified health management strategy. The department is increasing its focus on preventive measures, including the mass vaccination of livestock residing in and around the lion habitats to stop the spread of diseases from domestic animals to the wild population. Additional efforts include regular deworming and tick-removal drives to ensure the long-term health of the big cats.
The government is also strengthening its veterinary infrastructure to manage future emergencies. New medical facilities are operational in key areas such as Sasan, Jamwala, and the Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh. To ensure a quick response to medical distress, the state has deployed specialized Rapid Action Teams and introduced a dedicated ‘lion ambulance’ service to facilitate the transport of injured or ill animals.
Despite these losses, conservationists note that the overall population remains significant. As per the 2025 census, the total population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat stands at 891. While this event is an environmental concern rather than a market-related one, it highlights the intensive resources and monitoring required for wildlife conservation management in the state.
