GeM Marks 10-Year Milestone With ₹1.55 Lakh Crore Annual GMV

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has completed a decade of operations, reaching an annual Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of over ₹1.55 lakh crore. Since its inception, the platform has processed more than ₹20 lakh crore in cumulative transactions, significantly transforming how government agencies procure goods and services from Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) and startups.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM), India's public procurement portal, has marked a decade of operations with significant growth in its transaction volumes. As of August 2026, the platform reported an annual Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) exceeding ₹1.55 lakh crore. This is a substantial increase from the ₹422 crore recorded during its first year of operation, reflecting the rapid digitization of government purchasing processes across the country.

Since its launch ten years ago, the platform has facilitated cumulative transactions worth over ₹20 lakh crore. The portal currently connects government buyers with a vast network of suppliers, including over 12.28 lakh Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) and more than 42,000 startups. This digital shift has aimed to improve transparency and price discovery in public procurement by creating a more competitive bidding environment.

For businesses, particularly in the manufacturing and service sectors, the platform has become a primary channel to access government contracts. The data indicates that MSEs have fulfilled orders worth over ₹9 lakh crore, accounting for nearly 45.6% of the platform's total cumulative transactions. This indicates that the government's push to prioritize local and smaller vendors through the 'Vocal for Local' and 'Make in India' initiatives is actively influencing trade flows.

The platform has also introduced financial utilities like 'GeM Sahay,' which helps MSEs secure collateral-free working capital financing against their confirmed purchase orders. This initiative is designed to address liquidity constraints that smaller vendors often face when dealing with long payment cycles in government contracts.

Investors should note that the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is a non-profit, government-run platform under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is not a publicly listed company, and there is no stock associated with it. Market participants should be careful not to confuse the portal with publicly traded companies that may have 'Gem' in their name, such as Gem Aromatics Limited. These listed companies operate in independent sectors like specialty chemicals and are not affiliated with the government's procurement portal. The key monitorable for investors going forward will be how the continued expansion of this digital platform impacts the operating margins and order books of listed companies that supply goods and services to the government.
