EPFO Higher Pension Claims Top 15 Lakh; 11,595 Pending

Over 15.24 lakh EPFO members have filed for higher pension benefits, with 11,595 claims currently pending as of August 5, 2026. This follows the transition to the new EPS 2026 framework, which mandates a strict 20-day settlement timeline. Members opting for this path must carefully balance higher monthly contributions against their future retirement income goals.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has reached a significant milestone in its transition to the higher pension framework, with over 15.24 lakh claims submitted by members following the landmark Supreme Court decision of November 2022. As of August 5, 2026, the retirement fund body has successfully issued 1,49,806 Pension Payment Orders (PPOs), with only 11,595 claims remaining under active review.

Transition to EPS 2026

This administrative shift is part of the broader rollout of the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) 2026, which officially superseded the older EPS 1995 framework on June 29, 2026. The new scheme is designed to align with the Code on Social Security, 2020, and introduces more rigid timelines for service delivery. Under the new rules, the EPFO is mandated to settle pension claims within 20 days. If the settlement is delayed beyond this period, the organization is required to pay a 12% annual interest on the delayed amount, a move aimed at increasing accountability for member payouts.

Understanding the Trade-off

The choice to opt for a higher pension is a critical financial decision for employees. By selecting this option, members effectively choose to contribute a larger portion of their actual salary toward the pension fund during their working years. This results in a direct reduction in the monthly take-home pay, as more funds are diverted to the pension corpus instead of the standard provident fund account. While this strategy is intended to provide a larger monthly pension upon retirement, it requires a long-term view of cash flow management, as the benefit is deferred to the retirement phase.

Operational and Systemic Context

The volume of pending claims is largely attributed to administrative hurdles rather than policy rejection. Common issues affecting claim processing include KYC mismatches, gaps in service history records, and inconsistencies in wage data provided by employers. Because the pension amount is calculated based on the average of actual wages, any discrepancy in historical employer data can delay the verification process.

As of March 31, 2026, the EPS supported 85.84 lakh pensioners, with a total disbursement of ₹15,819.28 crore for the year. While the scheme provides stability for retirees, it remains a government-managed social security fund, and its long-term health depends on actuarial sustainability. Members should monitor their claim status via the EPFO portal and ensure their employer-provided service and wage history is accurate, as this remains the most frequent reason for delays in receiving the higher pension benefit.
