The Delhi government has rebranded its women's welfare initiative as the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, promising ₹2,500 in monthly financial aid. The program is expected to launch around Raksha Bandhan on August 28, targeting women aged 21 to 60 with a family income below ₹2.5 lakh.
The Delhi government is preparing to roll out the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, a welfare program designed to provide monthly financial support of ₹2,500 to eligible women. This initiative replaces the previously proposed Mahila Samriddhi Yojana and fulfills a commitment made during the 2025 Delhi assembly elections. Officials are aiming for a formal launch coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan festival on August 28, 2026.
Eligibility and Disbursement Details
To qualify for the monthly assistance, applicants must be women between the ages of 21 and 60. Additional requirements include a minimum residency of 10 years in Delhi, an annual family income cap of ₹2.5 lakh, and a clean criminal record. The government plans to utilize the Direct Benefit Transfer system to ensure that funds are credited directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, a method intended to minimize payment delays and improve overall transparency in fund distribution.
Context of State-Level Cash Assistance
This move by the Delhi administration follows a trend of similar direct cash assistance programs for women across various Indian states. Comparable initiatives include the Ladli Behna Yojana in Madhya Pradesh, the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana in Maharashtra, and the Subhadra Yojana in Odisha. These programs are generally aimed at increasing the financial independence of women and providing supplemental support for household expenses. From an economic perspective, the success of such schemes often depends on the state’s fiscal capacity to sustain long-term expenditure and the efficiency of the identification and verification process for beneficiaries.
New Mandate for Public Transport
In a separate development, the Delhi government has also introduced a new requirement for public transit. Starting August 1, 2026, the Pink Saheli Smart Card will become mandatory for women availing of free travel on Delhi Transport Corporation buses. Existing paper tickets will no longer be valid after July 31. This transition aligns with the broader 'One Nation, One Card' initiative supported by the central government, which aims to integrate transit payments under a single digital framework. Investors and residents may monitor the application process for these cards and the upcoming eligibility documentation requirements for the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana as the official launch date approaches.
