Delhi Expands Welfare by Doubling Ration Card Income Limit

The Delhi government is boosting its social welfare programs by nearly doubling the income ceiling for ration card eligibility to ₹2.5 lakh per year, up from ₹1.25 lakh. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated this change will extend critical government aid, including free rations and Ayushman cards, to more families. This move represents a major expansion of support for vulnerable residents.

New Ration Cards and Streamlined Application Process

In addition to the income limit increase, the administration will distribute 7.72 lakh new ration cards. This is the first major issuance since 2013. The application portal has reopened under updated 2026 guidelines. Over 3.72 lakh applications pending for more than a decade have been cancelled, paving the way for a more current and efficient system.

Audits Ensure Accurate Beneficiary Distribution

As part of the policy update, an audit removed beneficiaries who no longer qualify. Official figures show 1.44 lakh people were removed for exceeding income limits. Additional adjustments included 35,800 individuals who did not collect rations, 29,580 deceased beneficiaries, and 23,394 duplicate cards. These actions aim to ensure benefits reach those most in need.

Digitizing Ration Services for Better Access

The entire ration card application and management system is now digital. This online approach reduces the need for applicants to visit government offices. Ration shops are also being upgraded with e-weighing machines, replacing manual scales. Biometric authentication is now mandatory for all beneficiaries, improving transparency and accountability in the distribution process.
