Citadel Acquires AI Fund's Portfolio After Rapid Losses

Leopold Aschenbrenner’s AI-focused fund, Situational Awareness, has offloaded its public equity portfolio to Citadel following a sharp market downturn. The fund, which surged to a $45 billion valuation earlier this year, faced massive losses as AI infrastructure stocks declined and leveraged positions failed. Investors are now focused on the fund's remaining private equity holdings, including its stake in Anthropic.

The Situational Awareness hedge fund, led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has undergone a major restructuring after a rapid reversal in its fortunes. After reporting returns as high as 439 percent by the end of June, the fund saw its public equity portfolio sold to Citadel in a block transaction this July. This move followed a volatile month where the fund’s concentrated bets on AI infrastructure faced heavy pressure from a market sell-off.

Impact of Concentrated AI Bets

The fund’s rapid decline was primarily driven by the performance of its top U.S.-listed holdings, including Nebius Group, Micron Technology, and other infrastructure-focused firms. Each of these companies experienced declines exceeding 35 percent throughout July. These losses were significantly amplified by the fund’s use of leverage—a strategy that magnifies potential gains but also increases the risk of sharp losses when market trends reverse. The situation was further complicated by the fund's short positions in various software companies, which saw their share prices rise, creating a double-sided impact on the fund's performance.

Shift in Market Sentiment

Aschenbrenner gained prominence in 2024 for his widely circulated essay predicting a surge in demand for AI-related hardware, such as data centers and semiconductors. This thesis initially guided the fund toward high returns as investors poured capital into AI-linked equities. However, the July market correction highlights the inherent risks of sector-specific concentration and the use of high leverage in volatile technology markets. While the fund has exited its public equity positions, it retains significant private investments, most notably a stake in AI startup Anthropic.

Background and Regulatory Context

Leopold Aschenbrenner’s career has been marked by both rapid academic success and professional controversy. After graduating from Columbia University at 19, he joined OpenAI’s Superalignment team. His departure from the company in 2024 followed allegations that he shared internal information, claims which Aschenbrenner has consistently denied. His background also includes a brief tenure at a fund founded by Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX.

For investors, this event serves as a case study in the risks associated with high-leverage strategies in the AI sector. The primary monitorable remains how the fund manages its remaining private asset portfolio and whether the current market correction affects the valuations of its unlisted holdings, such as Anthropic. There has been no disclosure regarding the specific financial impact on the fund's investors, but the transition of its public portfolio to Citadel marks the end of its aggressive strategy in the public equity markets.
