The Centre has informed the Delhi High Court that it will provide necessary medical aid to activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on a hunger strike. The court has directed daily health monitoring to ensure his safety as he protests against alleged examination irregularities.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday addressed a petition regarding the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 19 days at Jantar Mantar. During the proceedings, a Division Bench presided over by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia emphasized the importance of safeguarding the life of every citizen.
In response to the plea, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, stated that government medical professionals are already tracking the activist's vitals. The government has provided an assurance to the court that it will intervene with necessary medical support whenever advised by these experts. Following this commitment, the court disposed of the Public Interest Litigation that had sought urgent judicial intervention to ensure Wangchuk's safety, including the potential for force-feeding if his condition deteriorated.
Wangchuk’s protest is focused on demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and highlighting concerns regarding alleged irregularities in examinations. According to the medical status reported during the court session, the activist has experienced a weight loss of more than 9 kg since beginning his fast on June 28, 2026. His most recent clinical indicators were noted at a weight of 56.65 kg, blood pressure of 105/61 mmHg, blood sugar at 80 mg/dL, and oxygen saturation at 97%.
The court’s order for daily clinical monitoring serves as a procedural measure to ensure that his health remains under active observation by medical authorities. The matter will now proceed with the expectation that the government continues its oversight as per the court's direction and medical advice.
