Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDIL) reported a 10% increase in Q2 profit to Rs 195 crore, supported by strong demand in its planning and design services. As the technical arm of Coal India, the firm is currently expanding its portfolio into critical mineral exploration and coal gasification to diversify its long-term revenue base.
Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDIL), the technical consultancy subsidiary of Coal India Limited, recorded a steady financial performance in the second quarter of the current fiscal year. The company reported a net profit of Rs 195 crore, representing a 10 percent year-on-year increase. Net sales for the period stood at Rs 593 crore, marking an 8 percent growth. While this growth rate is lower than the previous quarter, the company maintained resilient operating margins of approximately 40 percent, reflecting its ability to manage core consultancy costs despite external economic pressures.
Segmental Business Performance
The company’s operational performance was divided across its two primary business lines: planning and design, and exploration. The planning and design division served as the primary growth engine during the quarter, recording a 20 percent increase in sales and nearly doubling its profit contribution to Rs 24 crore. This segment benefited from a rise in external consultancy assignments, R&D initiatives, and the increasing demand for e-auction services.
In contrast, the exploration segment faced significant operational headwinds. Despite a 12 percent increase in overall drilling volumes, sales in this division grew by only 9 percent. Profitability remained thin, with margins hovering around 11 percent. The company attributed this pressure to rising fuel prices and increased material costs, which drove exploration expenses up by 25 percent. Management is focusing on stabilizing these costs as the company moves into the seasonally more active second half of the fiscal year.
Strategic Pivot to New Growth Pillars
To reduce its historical dependence on core coal mine planning, CMPDIL is accelerating its diversification strategy. The firm has identified coal gasification and critical mineral exploration as its next major growth pillars. The company has already initiated pilot programs in coal gasification, including a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) to leverage advanced technology.
Furthermore, the entry into critical minerals is intended to position the company as a key player in India's changing resource landscape. Active exploration is currently underway for rare earth blocks in regions including Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. The management aims for these new business lines, which also encompass emerging areas like carbon credit services, to contribute 10 to 15 percent of total revenue within the next three years.
Risks and Outlook
While the company continues to see strong demand for new mine planning—underpinned by the award of 147 commercial coal blocks since 2020—investors should note the risks associated with this diversification. Execution of high-value gasification and critical mineral projects involves longer lead times and regulatory complexities compared to traditional mine design. Additionally, the exploration segment remains vulnerable to input cost fluctuations, particularly in fuel and raw materials. The future success of this strategy will depend on the company's ability to scale these new divisions while maintaining the margins of its core planning and design business.
