Bish Agrawal, Founder of ABC Consultants, Passes Away

Bish Agrawal, the pioneer who established India’s first professional executive search firm, ABC Consultants, in 1969, has passed away. His work transformed how leadership roles were filled in the country, moving from family-based networks to merit-based hiring. Agrawal’s legacy includes training generations of recruiters who eventually built the broader Indian headhunting sector.

Bish Agrawal, a pivotal figure in the Indian corporate landscape, has passed away at the age of 88. Often referred to as the architect of India’s executive search industry, Agrawal founded Associated Business Consultants, widely known as ABC Consultants, in Kolkata in 1969. At a time when Indian businesses relied almost exclusively on family connections and informal networks to appoint leaders, Agrawal introduced a professional approach to human resources and recruitment.

Breaking the Mold of Professional Hiring

Equipped with a degree in metallurgy and an MBA, Agrawal chose to build a business rather than pursue a conventional corporate role. In the era of the Licence-Permit Raj, his primary mission was to show that Indian professionals possessed the talent and caliber required to lead large conglomerates and multinational corporations. He worked closely with major business houses, such as the Tatas and Birlas, to help 'Indianise' their top management ranks. His ability to identify leadership potential beyond academic qualifications became his professional hallmark.

Impact on the Indian Recruitment Sector

When India began its economic liberalization journey in 1991, the demand for top-tier professional leadership grew significantly. Multinational firms entering the Indian market turned to ABC Consultants to find country heads and senior executives. Recognizing this shift, Agrawal and his daughter, Sonal Agrawal, launched Accord, a specialized practice focused entirely on C-suite placements.

Beyond building his own successful firm, Agrawal’s influence is seen in the professional ecosystem he created. Unlike many entrepreneurs who might view competition as a threat, Agrawal followed a philosophy of training and nurturing talent. Many professionals who began their careers at ABC Consultants eventually branched out to start their own recruitment and search firms. This cycle of entrepreneurship helped turn executive search from a niche activity into a recognized and highly valued professional sector in India today.

In 2020, Agrawal received the Global Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants (AESC) for his contributions to the profession. While Agrawal’s passing marks the end of an era for the firm, the structure of the recruitment industry he helped institutionalize continues to serve as the backbone for corporate talent acquisition in India. Investors and market observers recognize the executive search sector as a critical indicator of economic activity, as it reflects how companies are scaling their leadership teams to match business growth plans.
