Bank Branch Closures: Schedule For July 6-9 In Select Cities

Bank branches in cities like Kolkata, Aizawl, and Shillong will observe holidays this week due to regional festivals. While physical branches in these areas will remain closed, digital banking and ATM services will continue to function normally. Equity markets remain unaffected by these state-specific bank holidays.

Banking operations in several Indian cities are set to face disruptions this week as bank branches observe holidays for state-specific festivals. These closures are scheduled under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which governs bank holidays across the country. While the impact is localized to specific regions, customers in affected areas should plan their financial transactions accordingly.

Regional Holiday Schedule

In Aizawl, Mizoram, bank branches will remain closed on July 6 to observe MHIP Day. This day is dedicated to the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl, a prominent organization focused on women's welfare in the state. Similarly, banks in Kolkata, West Bengal, will observe a holiday on the same day for the birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

Moving into the mid-week, financial institutions in Shillong, Meghalaya, will be non-operational on July 9. The closure is for the festival of Beh Deinkhlam, a traditional harvest celebration where rituals are performed to seek blessings for a productive agricultural season. These regional holidays are independent of the standard nationwide banking calendar.

Impact on Services and Markets

For customers of major lenders like State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, it is important to note that the closure applies specifically to physical branch operations. Essential banking infrastructure, including automated teller machines (ATMs) and online banking portals, are expected to remain functional. Customers requiring specific branch-based services such as document submission, locker access, or detailed manual consultations are advised to verify the operational status of their nearest branch before visiting.

Despite the local bank closures, national financial systems remain stable. Trading activities on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will continue as per their regular schedules, as state-specific bank holidays do not influence equity market trading hours. Similarly, commodity exchanges like MCX and NCDEX will operate normally throughout the week. Investors using these platforms for trading activities will experience no disruption to their buy or sell orders.

Ongoing Bank Schedules

Beyond these specific regional holidays, banks across India continue to follow the standard schedule of weekend closures. Under current RBI-regulated norms, banks are non-operational on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, while remaining open on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays. Sundays continue to be universal holidays for all banking institutions. Investors and bank customers can expect normal branch operations to resume immediately following these local holidays.
