BSE Limited will join the Nifty 50 index, replacing IT major Wipro, effective September 30, 2026. This rebalancing by NSE Indices, triggered by BSE’s significantly higher free-float market capitalization, will likely lead to major passive fund adjustments. While BSE will move into the benchmark index, Wipro will shift to the Nifty Next 50, reflecting divergent performance trends in the two companies.
The Nifty 50 index is set for a significant composition change that highlights the shifting valuations in the Indian stock market. Effective September 30, 2026, after the close of trading on the previous day, BSE Limited will replace Wipro Limited in the benchmark index. This decision comes after a semi-annual review conducted by NSE Indices, which manages the index.
The Reason Behind the Shift
The primary driver for this change is the difference in free-float market capitalization, which is the value of shares readily available for trading. Recent data shows that BSE’s six-month average free-float market capitalization reached approximately ₹1,40,879 crore. In contrast, Wipro’s figure stood at roughly ₹55,930 crore. Since index rules require the incoming company to meet specific market cap thresholds—typically at least 1.5 times that of the smallest existing constituent—BSE qualified for the upgrade while Wipro fell below the required criteria to remain in the top 50.
Impact on Passive Investment Flows
This rebalancing is a major event for passive investment funds, such as Index Funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which are legally required to mirror the weightings of the Nifty 50. As a result, these funds must sell their holdings in the departing stock and purchase shares of the new entrant. Analysts estimate that this mandatory portfolio adjustment could trigger passive inflows of approximately $695 million to $741 million into BSE shares. Conversely, Wipro is expected to face outflows of about $152 million to $246 million as funds rebalance their holdings. While these flows provide a technical boost, the actual price impact often depends on how many investors anticipate these moves before the official date.
Contrasting Performance Trends
The shift in the index membership also tells a story of the underlying business performance of both companies in 2026. Year-to-date, BSE shares have seen a rally of roughly 37%, supported by growth in financial market infrastructure and trading volumes. In the same period, Wipro shares have declined by approximately 30%, reflecting broader headwinds facing the Indian IT services sector. Many firms in this space are struggling with the transition toward newer technologies and concerns over how AI may disrupt traditional, labor-intensive outsourcing models.
What Investors Should Monitor
It is important for investors to distinguish between index inclusion and long-term business quality. Inclusion in the Nifty 50 is a technical result of market valuation thresholds and does not guarantee future financial growth or stock stability. Following the announcement, BSE shares have experienced upward volatility, rising about 4% in the days following the news, while Wipro has faced downward pressure. As the September 30 deadline approaches, investors should prepare for potential volatility in both stocks. The most important monitorable will be the actual execution of fund trades, as market prices often fluctuate in anticipation of the official rebalancing date.
