The Assam government has increased compensation for flood victims' families to ₹9 lakh and simplified documentation norms to speed up payments. The state is also providing direct financial aid to one lakh severely affected households and support for students across four districts.
The Assam government has announced significant financial relief measures in response to the state’s ongoing flood crisis, which has now claimed 75 lives. As part of a new policy to support impacted families, the administration has increased the total ex gratia payment for those who have lost loved ones or have family members missing to ₹9 lakh. This figure combines the standard government relief of ₹4 lakh with an additional ₹5 lakh provided directly from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
Simplified Claims Process and Direct Aid
To address concerns regarding administrative delays during the emergency, the state has removed the requirement for a post-mortem report to process compensation claims. Moving forward, a certificate issued by the relevant circle officer will be considered sufficient documentation. Additionally, the government is rolling out direct financial assistance of ₹15,000 to approximately one lakh families living in the most severely affected regions, specifically Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. These funds are intended to help households manage immediate expenses and will be transferred directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts.
Targeted Support for Students and Beneficiaries
Recognizing the disruption to education caused by the floods, the government has introduced financial aid for students in the Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. Depending on their academic level, students can receive between ₹1,000 and ₹5,000 for purchasing essential books and uniforms, while fees for replacing lost educational documents like marksheets have been waived. Furthermore, individuals already enrolled in the state’s Orunodoi scheme within these four districts will receive a temporary doubling of their monthly benefit to ₹2,500 for the month of August.
Relief Fund and Ongoing Operations
Funding for these relief initiatives is being supported by the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, which has gathered more than ₹26 crore in donations during this flood wave. While relief and rescue missions involving the Army, Air Force, and disaster response teams remain active, the focus has shifted toward stabilizing the livelihoods of those displaced. Currently, over 32,000 people remain in 81 relief camps across the affected regions. The primary monitorable for residents and local observers remains the pace of fund disbursement and the eventual return of displaced individuals to their homes as water levels recede.
