Andhra Pradesh Launches ₹2,500 Crore Semiconductor Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Andhra Pradesh’s first greenfield airport and a ₹2,500 crore semiconductor facility in Visakhapatnam. The project, led by ASIP Technologies, aims to build domestic chip assembly capabilities under the India Semiconductor Mission. Investors will monitor the execution of this high-tech project and its future revenue potential.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially launched major infrastructure and industrial projects in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant step in the state's economic expansion. The initiative includes the inauguration of the Bhogapuram international airport, developed at a cost of over ₹5,640 crore, and the commencement of a strategic semiconductor manufacturing facility in Visakhapatnam. These projects are part of a broader industrial push valued at more than ₹17,900 crore.

Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility Details

The most notable industrial development is the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility. This project is being executed by ASIP Technologies in partnership with South Korea’s APACT Co. It holds the distinction of being the first semiconductor packaging facility in South India to receive approval under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The initial phase of this project involves an investment of ₹460 crore, which is a portion of the total planned capital expenditure of ₹2,500 crore.

The facility is designed to address a critical gap in the domestic semiconductor supply chain by focusing on the assembly and testing of chips. The company has set an ambitious annual production target of 96 million chips, targeting high-growth areas like artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Following the initial launch, the company plans to scale operations with an additional ₹2,000 crore investment in future phases, which the management expects to create over 1,000 direct high-skilled jobs.

Investment Context and Operational Risks

For investors, the primary monitorable will be the company’s ability to execute this project within the planned timeline. Semiconductor manufacturing involves complex technology and high capital intensity. While the government’s support under the India Semiconductor Mission provides a favorable framework, the project faces typical risks associated with new, large-scale industrial ventures, such as potential delays in equipment procurement, technical integration hurdles, and the need to secure long-term purchase agreements with global chip designers.

Additionally, the semiconductor sector is highly competitive and sensitive to global demand trends. The financial viability of this facility will depend heavily on the company's ability to maintain efficient profit margins while ramping up production. Unlike established electronics manufacturing hubs, this project is a new venture in the region, meaning investors should track how effectively the company can attract skilled labor and manage the logistical requirements of such a high-precision operation. Future updates regarding the commissioning of the production lines and the securing of anchor customers will be important for assessing the long-term impact on the company's financial performance.
