Amritsar Police Intercepts Cross-Border Arms Shipment

Amritsar Rural Police arrested 28-year-old Navjot Singh on Sunday after seizing an AK-47, live ammunition, and hand grenades. The suspect, a resident of Tarn Taran, was allegedly acting under instructions from foreign-based smuggling entities. This operation is part of an ongoing security initiative by state authorities to dismantle cross-border arms and narcotics trafficking networks in Punjab.

The Amritsar Rural Police conducted a targeted operation on Sunday, successfully intercepting a consignment of military-grade weaponry. Authorities arrested 28-year-old Navjot Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, who was apprehended while transporting the illegal hardware on a motorcycle.

Details of the Seizure

The recovery from the suspect included a fully functional AK-47 assault rifle, a loaded magazine, nine live cartridges, and two hand grenades. The operation was executed by specialized units of the Amritsar Rural Police following actionable intelligence regarding the movement of the consignment.

Legal action has been initiated under the provisions of the Arms Act and the Explosive Substances Act. The Gharinda Police Station has registered FIR No. 425 to formalize the charges. Officials confirmed that the suspect was coordinating with foreign-based smuggling groups, serving as a courier for moving prohibited items across the border.

Security and Operational Context

The arrest is part of a broader, sustained effort by Punjab law enforcement, directed by the state police leadership, to secure the border region. Throughout 2026, security forces have increased their vigilance to combat the evolving methods used by trafficking networks, including the use of drones and other illicit channels to distribute sophisticated weaponry within the state.

While this operation prevents the distribution of high-grade arms to potential local organized crime groups, authorities have emphasized that the investigation is now focused on identifying the origins of the weapons and mapping the intended recipients. The investigation remains active as officials work to uncover further affiliations and dismantle the supply chain associated with the arrested individual.
