Abakkus MF CEO: Fundamentals Key As Liquidity-Driven Market Shifts

Vaibhav Chugh, CEO of Abakkus Mutual Fund, advises investors to prioritize earnings and business quality over liquidity-led market rallies. He highlights Specialized Investment Funds as an emerging category and urges caution in high-growth sectors like defense, where execution risk remains critical.

Vaibhav Chugh, the CEO of Abakkus Mutual Fund, has cautioned investors that while liquidity can drive short-term price movements, long-term wealth creation must be anchored in solid business fundamentals. In a recent commentary, he highlighted that the current market environment is shifting, making it necessary to look beyond momentum and focus strictly on sustainable earnings growth, cash flow generation, and the inherent quality of companies.

Focusing on Business Quality

Abakkus Mutual Fund, which employs a proprietary research framework known as 'MEETS'—covering Management, Earnings, Events, Trends, and Structural considerations—emphasizes a bottom-up approach to stock selection. According to Chugh, this method is especially relevant in the current market, where some mid- and small-cap segments appear to be driven more by easy liquidity than by actual financial performance. For investors, this means the risk of overpaying for companies is higher if they do not carefully analyze whether growth expectations are backed by real profit margins and operational cash flow.

The Rise of Specialized Investment Funds

Chugh also pointed to the growing importance of Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs). This product category is gaining traction as it offers a middle ground between traditional mutual funds and Portfolio Management Services (PMS). SIFs provide investors with greater flexibility in strategy and broader accessibility than high-end portfolio services. However, he noted that the success of these funds relies heavily on disciplined risk management and a consistent investment philosophy that can navigate various market cycles, rather than just chasing assets under management (AUM).

Caution in High-Growth Themes

While structural themes such as defense, power, infrastructure, and localization efforts are genuine drivers of the current economic cycle, Chugh advised investors to be selective. He noted that certain pockets within the defense and artificial intelligence sectors may already be fully factoring in significant future growth, leaving little room for error. A key monitorable for investors is the execution capacity of these companies. Having a large order book is one thing, but the ability to execute those orders on time and at profitable margins is a different challenge. Investors should track whether companies in these sectors can convert their large order books into actual revenue and profit without facing cost overruns or operational delays.

As the market matures, the primary takeaway is the need for rigorous research. Investors are encouraged to look past broader market indices and focus on individual company metrics, as the gap between companies that can sustain growth and those reliant solely on market liquidity may widen significantly in the coming quarters.
