Demand for AI skills in technology job postings has surged nearly 17-fold since 2020, now reaching 15.4% of descriptions. Non-tech sectors also show a six-fold increase, signaling a broad shift in workforce requirements. Professionals possessing these specialized skills are increasingly securing higher median salaries across multiple industries.

The integration of artificial intelligence into the Indian workplace has entered a phase of rapid acceleration. According to data from the 2026 World AI Day Report, the requirement for AI proficiency in technology-focused job descriptions has jumped to 15.4%, compared to just 0.9% in 2020. This near 17-fold increase reflects how companies are shifting from experimental AI usage to embedding these tools into core technical business processes.

Expanding Beyond the IT Sector

The adoption of AI is no longer limited to software development and engineering teams. Non-technology job descriptions are also seeing a significant shift in requirements. The share of non-tech roles mentioning AI skills has grown six-fold, rising from 0.26% in 2020 to 1.59% in 2026. This trend suggests that roles in business operations, marketing, and human resources are increasingly expected to utilize AI tools to improve efficiency.

Salary Premiums and Senior Hiring

There is a measurable financial incentive for professionals to acquire these skills. Data indicates that individuals with documented AI competencies earn higher median salaries than those without, both within the IT sector and in non-IT departments. Salary growth for AI-centric roles has also outperformed general wage trends over the last four years, reflecting the high business value placed on these capabilities.

Recruitment strategies are currently focused on senior talent. Companies are most actively seeking professionals with 13 to 16 years of experience, or even those with over 16 years, to lead large-scale AI implementation projects. This strategy aims to place seasoned leaders in roles where they can guide organizational changes rather than just performing basic tasks.

Functions Leading the Adoption

AI utilization is not uniform across all departments. Professionals in product management, data science, and software engineering report the highest daily usage of AI tools. For these functions, AI proficiency has moved from a specialized advantage to a standard requirement. For investors, this shift highlights companies that are successfully integrating AI to drive productivity versus those that may face challenges in upskilling their workforce. The long-term impact on profit margins will depend on how effectively these firms can translate the increased cost of AI-skilled talent into higher operational output and innovation.
