SBI Healthcare Fund Tops Pharma Category With 23.5% Half-Year Return

SBI Healthcare Opportunities Fund has outperformed major peer funds with a 23.5% return over the last six months. While the recent performance is robust, investors should note the higher risk profile associated with sector-specific funds.

The SBI Healthcare Opportunities Fund has emerged as the frontrunner in the pharmaceutical and healthcare mutual fund category. According to data tracked as of August 12, 2026, the fund delivered a return of 23.5% over the preceding six months, placing it ahead of its major peers in the sector.

Competition in the healthcare-focused mutual fund space remains active. For the same six-month period, the DSP Healthcare Fund recorded a gain of 22.2%, while the Mirae Asset Healthcare Fund provided a return of 19.7%. This performance comparison includes funds managing assets of at least Rs 1,500 crore, offering a view of how the larger schemes in this category have navigated the recent market environment.

Beyond the short-term gains, the fund has maintained a consistent record over longer periods. On a one-year basis, it outpaced its benchmark by 17.4 percentage points. Similarly, over a three-year horizon, the fund outperformed its benchmark by 6.5 percentage points, highlighting its ability to track—and exceed—sector benchmarks over sustained periods.

Investors considering sectoral funds like the SBI Healthcare Opportunities Fund should understand their unique structure and risks. Under SEBI regulations, these funds are required to invest at least 80% of their assets into a single industry. In this case, that means the fund is almost entirely tied to the performance of pharma and healthcare companies.

Because these funds do not have the flexibility to spread investments across different sectors like banking, IT, or infrastructure, they are classified as 'Very High Risk' investments. They are highly dependent on the market cycle of a single industry. When the healthcare sector thrives, these funds can deliver significant returns, but they can also face sharper declines than diversified equity funds if the sector faces headwinds such as regulatory changes, pricing pressure, or weak demand.

For investors, the most important monitorable remains the cyclical nature of the healthcare industry. Unlike diversified funds that can shift focus, the performance of this fund is heavily linked to the industry's health. Investors may look beyond short-term percentage gains and consider the long-term outlook for the healthcare sector, the fund manager's track record, and whether the fund aligns with their own risk tolerance and investment time horizon.
