Motilal Oswal Focused Fund Leads 6-Month Returns: Understanding Risks

Motilal Oswal Focused Fund has delivered an 18.5% return over the last six months, outperforming several peers. While this short-term gain is notable, investors should understand that focused funds concentrate on a limited number of stocks, which increases both potential returns and volatility. It is important to look beyond short-term performance when assessing such high-risk funds.

The Motilal Oswal Focused Fund has secured the top position among focused mutual funds, delivering a return of 18.5% over the six-month period ending in early August 2026. This performance outpaced rivals such as the Invesco India Focused Fund and the SBI Focused Fund during the same timeframe. With an assets under management (AUM) of approximately ₹1,635 crore, the fund has attracted attention for its recent short-term strategy.

Understanding the Focused Strategy

To understand why this fund moves differently than many others, investors should look at its structure. Unlike diversified equity funds that may hold stocks across a wide range of companies and sectors to spread risk, a focused fund limits its portfolio to a maximum of 30 stocks. This strategy is designed to concentrate capital in the fund manager's highest-conviction ideas. While this can lead to strong gains when those specific bets perform well, it also carries higher concentration risk. If a few of the top holdings underperform, the impact on the fund's overall value can be more severe than in a broader, more diversified portfolio.

Performance Volatility Across Timeframes

Rankings in the mutual fund space are often fluid and highly dependent on the chosen timeframe. For instance, data shows that performance leaders can shift significantly when looking at different durations, such as one month, three months, or three years. While the Motilal Oswal Focused Fund led the pack over the recent six-month period, other funds like the Invesco India Focused Fund have shown stronger performance over longer periods, such as the three-year mark.

This volatility is a common characteristic of focused funds. Investors may find that a fund which ranks at the top in the short term might not maintain that position over a longer, multi-year cycle. Relying solely on a six-month return chart can be misleading because it often reflects short-term market trends rather than the long-term compounding potential of the underlying companies.

What Investors Should Track

When evaluating a focused fund, the most important factors for investors are the long-term track record of the fund manager and the fund’s consistent performance across different market cycles. Since these funds are categorized as carrying 'Very High' risk, they are generally better suited for investors with a higher risk appetite who are looking for aggressive growth potential rather than stable, low-volatility returns.

Before making investment decisions, one should review the fund's performance over at least a three-to-five-year period to see how it navigated both bull and bear markets. Additionally, monitoring the fund’s sector allocation and ensuring it aligns with one's own financial goals is essential. The next important update for shareholders will be the monthly fact sheet, which provides insights into any changes in the portfolio's top holdings and the manager’s current outlook on the market.
