Mutual fund flows in April presented a distinct pattern, with mid-cap and small-cap categories attracting significant investor capital despite a broader deceleration in overall equity inflows. This trend, detailed by data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), suggests a strategic re-evaluation by investors.
SIP Strength Bolsters Niche Funds
Strong inflows via Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) have been a key driver for the mid- and small-cap segments. According to Kaustubh Belapurkar, Director, Fund Research at Morningstar Investment Adviser India, consistent SIPs provide steady demand. "The improving performance seen in these categories has also acted as a magnet for investor money," Belapurkar noted, highlighting a favorable market phase for smaller companies.
Thematic Funds Face Investor Skepticism
Concurrently, investor enthusiasm for sectoral and thematic funds appears to be waning. Juzer Gabajiwala, Director at Ventura Securities, observed a noticeable cooling-off, attributing it to growing investor caution. "Investors are becoming more discerning, perhaps wary of the concentrated risks associated with thematic bets, especially after periods of underperformance in certain sectors," Gabajiwala explained. This pivot suggests a preference for diversification and potentially less volatile growth avenues over sector-specific bets.
