ICICI Pru Retirement Fund-Pure Equity Delivers 20.7% 3-Year Return

The ICICI Prudential Retirement Fund-Pure Equity Plan has achieved a 20.7% three-year annual return, significantly outperforming its 9.3% benchmark. While the fund is a leader in its category, investors should factor in its five-year lock-in period and high-risk equity exposure when evaluating long-term retirement planning.

The ICICI Prudential Retirement Fund-Pure Equity Plan has emerged as a top performer in the solution-oriented retirement category, reporting a 20.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past three years. This performance is notably higher than its benchmark index, which delivered a 9.3% return during the same timeframe. The fund, which operates as an open-ended flexi-cap scheme, is designed to generate long-term capital appreciation for retirement planning.

While this three-year performance highlights the fund’s potential, investors often look at different timeframes to judge consistency. In shorter durations, other schemes have occasionally shown stronger results, such as the Nippon India Retirement Fund-Wealth Creation, which recently led in one-month returns, and the Tata Retirement Savings Fund-Progressive Plan, which stood out in three-month performance metrics. These variations reflect the inherent volatility of equity markets and the different investment strategies employed by fund managers.

For context on fund size and scale, the HDFC Retirement Savings Fund-Equity Plan remains a significant player in this category, managing a larger corpus of approximately ₹6,832 crore compared to the ICICI fund’s assets under management of roughly ₹1,997 crore as of June 30, 2026. A larger fund size can sometimes offer different stability dynamics, though it does not guarantee superior returns.

Investors considering such retirement-oriented funds must account for the specific structure of these products. A primary feature of these plans is the mandatory five-year lock-in period. This requirement restricts immediate liquidity, meaning money cannot be withdrawn freely until the lock-in expires. This feature is intended to enforce long-term financial discipline for retirement goals, but it also means investors should be certain about their liquidity needs before committing capital.

As a 'Very High' risk equity scheme, the fund is subject to significant market fluctuations. The returns are also influenced by equity market cycles, and investors should be mindful of tax implications, including both short-term and long-term capital gains taxes, which can impact the final net return on investment. Rather than focusing solely on a single period of strong performance, investors should monitor the fund’s long-term consistency, expense ratios, and how the fund manager navigates market downturns compared to peers.
