HDFC Defence Fund Leads Thematic Category With 30.7% Six-Month Returns

HDFC Defence Fund has recorded a 30.7% return over the last six months, outpacing several peers in the thematic mutual fund category. With assets exceeding ₹10,700 crore, the fund continues to draw interest, but investors should be aware of the high risks associated with sector-concentrated investments.

HDFC Defence Fund has emerged as a top performer among thematic mutual funds, delivering a 30.7% return over the six-month period ending in August 2026. With an assets under management (AUM) size exceeding ₹10,700 crore, the fund has established itself as one of the largest in this category. This performance places it ahead of several other thematic schemes, such as the Kotak Pioneer Fund and the Kotak Manufacture in India Fund, which recorded lower returns during the same timeframe.

While the recent performance is strong, it is important for investors to understand the nature of thematic mutual funds. Unlike a diversified fund that spreads risk across various industries, a thematic fund like the HDFC Defence Fund is highly concentrated in a single sector. This structure means that if the defence industry performs well, the fund has the potential for significant gains. However, it also means that if defence stocks face pressure or volatility, the fund's value can decline sharply. The fund's performance is closely tied to its benchmark, the Nifty India Defence TRI, and depends heavily on short-term sector sentiment and policy shifts.

Leadership in mutual fund performance often shifts based on the timeframe being analyzed. While the HDFC Defence Fund has shown strong growth over longer horizons, including a notable three-year return trajectory, other themes have taken the lead in shorter periods. For example, funds focused on transportation and logistics have recently outperformed other themes over one-month and three-month windows. This variation highlights the tendency of sector-specific funds to move in cycles, which can be different from the broader market.

Investors tracking this fund should account for both the cost of exit and the risk level. The fund carries a 'Very High' risk rating, which reflects its exposure to the specific volatility of the defence and allied industries. Additionally, there is a 1% exit load applicable if units are redeemed within one year of the investment date. The key factors that will influence the fund's future performance include government spending on defence, changes in procurement policies, and the overall volatility of the underlying stocks. Investors may want to look beyond short-term returns and assess whether the concentration in a single sector aligns with their long-term financial goals and risk tolerance.
