The Bank of India Mid & Small Cap Equity & Debt Fund has outperformed its peer group with a 12.5% return over the last six months. While the fund shows strong consistency, investors should weigh the risks associated with its focus on mid and small-cap stocks before making decisions.
The Bank of India Mid & Small Cap Equity & Debt Fund has emerged as a top performer among aggressive hybrid funds, delivering a 12.5% return over the six-month period ending in August 2026. This performance stands out in a category that typically balances equity growth with the stability of debt instruments.
Managed by Alok Singh, who has overseen the fund since February 2017, the scheme follows a strategy of investing the majority of its assets, generally between 65% and 80%, into mid and small-cap companies. The remaining portion is allocated to fixed-income securities. This structure allows the fund to capture higher growth potential from smaller companies while using debt to manage some of the inherent market volatility.
Beyond the recent six-month gains, the fund has shown steady performance over the longer term. Its three-year annualized returns, which stood at 17.4%, highlight the fund's ability to maintain momentum across different market cycles. When compared to larger funds, such as the SBI Equity Hybrid Fund, which manages a significantly higher asset base, this fund's smaller asset size—approximately ₹1,840 crore as of late July 2026—allows it more agility to move in and out of specific mid and small-cap stocks.
Investors, however, should note that the fund's performance is closely tied to the volatility of the mid and small-cap segments. Unlike large-cap funds that invest in established, stable companies, this fund’s focus on smaller firms often leads to sharper price swings during market downturns. The fund also carries an exit load of 1% for units redeemed or switched out within three months of allotment, a factor that investors should keep in mind if they are looking for short-term parking of funds.
As with all mutual fund investments, past performance, including this recent surge, does not guarantee future results. While the current returns are strong, the fund’s success depends on the manager's ability to pick the right stocks within the volatile small and mid-cap space. Investors may want to monitor the fund's portfolio concentration and market conditions, as the aggressive nature of the equity component means the fund is better suited for those with a higher risk appetite and a long-term investment horizon.
