Aditya Birla SL and Axis Short-Duration Fund Performance Data

Aditya Birla Sun Life Short Term Fund led the one-month returns at 0.6%, while Axis Short Duration Fund topped six-month and one-year performance metrics. These rankings, which focus on funds with over Rs 1,500 crore in assets, show how fund performance can vary significantly depending on the investment time horizon.

Mutual fund investors often look at performance data to compare schemes, but the recent ranking of short-duration debt funds highlights how results can change based on the timeframe chosen. As of July 28, 2026, data from ACE MF shows that the Aditya Birla Sun Life Short Term Fund achieved the top position for one-month returns with a gain of 0.6 percent. Other funds, including the UTI Short Duration Fund and the SBI Short Term Debt Fund, matched this one-month performance.

While short-term snapshots can be useful, the leaders change when looking at longer periods. The Axis Short Duration Fund emerged as a consistent performer over extended durations. It recorded a 3.4 percent return over six months and led its peers over a one-year period with a 5.6 percent return. This leadership continued into the three-year timeframe, where the fund achieved a 7.3 percent compound annual growth rate. These figures highlight the difference between capturing a quick monthly gain and sustaining performance over several years.

When evaluating these funds, size and scale are important factors for investors to consider. Among the top-performing schemes, the SBI Short Term Debt Fund manages the largest corpus at Rs 13,975.6 crore. Larger funds often provide more stability and liquidity, though they may face different challenges in managing portfolio allocations compared to smaller, more agile funds. All funds included in this analysis maintain an asset base exceeding Rs 1,500 crore, ensuring they meet a certain threshold of scale.

Investors should remember that comparing funds across different categories can lead to poor decisions. Short-duration funds invest in debt instruments with specific maturity profiles, which differ significantly from liquid, long-duration, or equity-oriented funds. Each category carries its own risk profile, interest rate sensitivity, and credit quality standards. Comparing a short-duration fund to a fund with a completely different investment mandate is often misleading, as their underlying strategies are designed for different financial goals. The key monitorable for investors remains the consistency of a fund's performance relative to its peers within the same category over their intended investment horizon, rather than focusing solely on the top-ranking fund for a single month.
