Tencent's Focus on India's AVGC Sector
Tencent is making a strategic multi-year commitment of over Rs 10 crore to India's growing Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector. This investment aims to develop the nation's creative technology ecosystem.
Partnerships for Growth
The Chinese tech giant has announced separate memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Game Developers Association of India (GDAI). These partnerships focus on developing India's creative tech sector through dedicated training, engaging with grassroots developers, and fostering international collaboration.
Supporting India's "Orange Economy"
India is championing its "Orange Economy"—sectors driven by creativity and culture—as a key driver for economic growth and job creation. The Economic Survey 2025-26 noted creative industries like gaming and live entertainment have high potential to create jobs across many related industries.
Skill Development and Global Reach
Tencent's three-year partnership with SEPC will focus on building capacity and encouraging industry discussion. The aim is to help Indian AVGC companies access global markets, supporting India's goal to train and employ two million professionals in the AVGC-XR sector by 2030. "Our goal goes beyond investing in programs. We want to work with local partners to build practical paths for talent, creators, and studios," said Danny Marti, head of public policy and global affairs at Tencent.
Grassroots Programs for Developers
The collaboration with GDAI will focus on grassroots skilling programs. Key initiatives include an annual National Game Jam for over 10,000 students, Train-the-Trainer programs for educators, and participation in the Indian Game Developers Conference (IGDC). Shruti Verma, CEO at GDAI, noted that developing globally competitive talent is key to making India a game development hub.
India's Gaming Market Outlook
This strategic push aligns with India's rapid growth in the global gaming market. Research firm Niko Partners projects India as the fastest-growing gaming market in Asia and nearby regions. Player spending is expected to reach $1.5 billion by 2028, and the gamer base to reach 724 million by 2029. Tencent also plans to explore internships and knowledge exchange, and aims to launch popular titles like Honor of Kings in India.
