Tata Play Launches Smart TV App As Revenue Dips 13.5%

Tata Play has introduced a standalone smart TV application to offer content without satellite hardware, aiming to compete in the connected TV market. This strategic shift follows a challenging 2025-26 period, where the company saw revenue decline by 13.5% to ₹3,530 crore and reported a net loss of ₹551 crore. Investors will monitor if this move can capture new users amidst a shrinking traditional DTH subscriber base.

Tata Play is shifting its business strategy by launching an application-based service that removes the need for physical set-top boxes and satellite dishes. The new service, Tata Play Smart, allows users to access over 500 channels directly through an internet connection on their smart TVs. This move represents a significant pivot for the company, which has historically relied on the direct-to-home (DTH) satellite model.

Moving Beyond Traditional DTH Hardware

The traditional DTH business model in India is currently facing structural challenges. As high-speed internet becomes more accessible in both urban and rural areas, many households are moving away from traditional satellite subscriptions toward streaming services. Industry data highlights a decline in paid DTH subscriptions, which have dropped by over 13% annually to approximately 48.6 million users as of mid-2026. By introducing a software-based service, Tata Play aims to retain existing customers and reach new demographics who may prefer the flexibility of an app over hardware installation.

The service uses a modular pricing model, starting at ₹199 for the first selected language and ₹99 for each additional language package. This pricing strategy attempts to offer flexibility, allowing users to pay only for the content they watch. The company is banking on the rapid growth of the connected TV segment, which reached 68 million units in 2025, with a significant portion of this growth coming from non-metropolitan areas.

Financial Context and Investor Monitorables

This launch comes at a time when the company is dealing with financial pressure. For the 2025-26 financial year, Tata Play reported a revenue decline of 13.5%, falling to ₹3,530 crore. The firm also posted a net loss of ₹551 crore, reflecting the impact of the contraction in the traditional DTH subscriber base. The transition to an app-based model is an attempt to address these financial headwinds by lowering the capital cost of acquiring new users.

However, the company enters a highly competitive environment dominated by established over-the-top (OTT) platforms that are often bundled with telecom plans. The success of this new service will depend on several factors: the ability to maintain a user-friendly interface that competes with established streaming apps, the pricing power compared to free or cheaper alternatives, and the cost of customer acquisition. For investors, the key monitorable will be the rate of subscriber migration from the traditional DTH platform to the new smart TV application, and whether this shift can successfully stabilize revenue and improve profit margins in the coming quarters.
