Sun TV Q1 Profit Rises 17% on Cricket Income Surge

Sun TV Network reported a 17% profit jump to ₹618.8 crore for Q1 FY27, largely supported by a surge in cricket franchise income. While total revenue rose 13%, advertising revenue saw a decline, and the stock closed lower as investors weighed the sustainability of earnings against rising working capital requirements.

Sun TV Network reported a consolidated net profit of ₹618.8 crore for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, marking a 16.93% increase compared to the same period last year. Total revenue for the quarter reached ₹1,457.8 crore, reflecting a 13% growth from the previous year. While these top-line and bottom-line figures showed growth, the underlying sources of this income are a key area for investors to examine.

A significant portion of this quarter's performance was driven by the company's cricket franchise, which contributed ₹629.83 crore, compared to ₹473.03 crore in the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. This cyclical income source provided a major boost to the company's financial results. In contrast, the core broadcasting business faced headwinds, with advertising revenue experiencing a decline during the quarter. Investors typically look for growth in advertising as a sign of long-term health in the media sector, so this trend may be a point of concern.

On the financial side, Sun TV Network continues to maintain a strong balance sheet, remaining largely debt-free. However, operational efficiency has emerged as a challenge. The company's working capital days—a measure of how long it takes to turn operations into cash—have risen significantly, moving from 245 days to 596 days. A sharp increase in this metric can signal that the company is taking longer to collect payments or manage its inventory, which can impact cash flow flexibility.

Following the announcement, the stock closed lower on August 12, 2026. This reaction suggests that market participants are carefully weighing the company's dependency on non-recurring income from cricket against the performance of its core media business. To reward shareholders, the board has declared an interim dividend of ₹5 per share, with the record date set for August 18, 2026.

Looking ahead, investors may focus on whether the company can improve its core advertising revenue and manage its working capital more effectively. The sustainability of income from cricket franchises remains a factor to watch, as this category is seasonal and can fluctuate year-to-year.
