Orenda Group is launching a Rs 100-crore Alternative Investment Fund to institutionalize film and media financing in India. The fund, which currently awaits SEBI approval, aims for a 30% return by diversifying capital across movies, media startups, and intellectual property. Investors should monitor the regulatory timeline and the inherent volatility of the entertainment sector.
Orenda Group is set to launch the 'Orenda Media Growth Fund,' a Rs 100-crore Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) aimed at professionalizing media financing in India. This initiative marks a strategic shift from the fragmented, project-by-project funding model traditionally seen in the Indian entertainment industry toward a more regulated, institutionalized approach. The fund, led by Tarun Shah, Manasi Parekh, Parthiv Gohil, and Rashaana Shah, is currently awaiting final licensing from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
The primary objective of this fund is to mitigate the high single-project risk that has historically challenged media investments. Instead of relying on the success of a single cinematic release, the fund intends to spread its capital across a diversified portfolio. The investment strategy allocates 50% of the funds to motion pictures, 30% to media and entertainment startups, and the remaining 20% to the creation of original intellectual property and live event assets. This structure is designed to offer a buffer against the volatility associated with individual film releases.
With a four-year tenure, the fund targets an internal rate of return (IRR) of 30%. While this target reflects the growth ambitions of the firm, investors should consider the inherent nature of the media and entertainment sector, where commercial success is difficult to predict. Furthermore, as an Alternative Investment Fund, capital is typically locked for the duration of the fund's life, which restricts immediate liquidity for investors compared to more traditional stock market instruments.
To demonstrate its intent and capability, the Orenda Group has already unveiled an initial production slate at the Venice Film Festival. This slate includes the adaptation of the novel 'Purple America,' a mystery thriller titled 'Nanda Devi,' and a project focused on social entrepreneurship called 'Laxman.' These cross-border projects suggest a focus on content with international marketability.
The fund is expected to open for subscription within the next month, pending the final receipt of the SEBI license. The most important monitorable for potential investors will be the regulatory approval process. Any delay or denial from the regulator would prevent the fund from becoming operational as planned. Additionally, the ability of the management team to execute on its diversified portfolio strategy and achieve its ambitious return targets will determine the long-term success of the fund.
