Netflix has signed a two-year deal with regional streamer Hoichoi to distribute Bengali shows in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The partnership aims to help the streaming giant increase its reach among Indian audiences who prefer vernacular content, a key area of competition against other local platforms.
Netflix has announced a two-year strategic partnership with the regional streaming platform Hoichoi. Under this agreement, the global streaming giant will distribute Bengali content dubbed into Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The partnership includes a library of 14 existing titles that have already performed well, as well as plans to co-produce new series through Hoichoi Studios.
For Netflix, this is a strategic move to deepen its presence in India’s regional entertainment market. While Netflix is known for its global library, its growth strategy in India relies heavily on attracting viewers in non-English speaking demographics. By licensing established hits from Hoichoi, which focuses on Bengali storytelling, Netflix can test regional demand without the high costs and risks associated with creating new content from scratch.
The content rollout is scheduled to begin on November 6 with the premiere of a new horror series titled 'The Cursed Temple of Kauriburi.' The deal utilizes a simultaneous release strategy, where new shows will debut on both platforms at the same time, though Netflix will provide them in multiple regional languages to widen their appeal.
This partnership underscores the ongoing shifts in India’s competitive streaming sector. Platforms such as JioCinema, Disney+ Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video are all vying for the same mass-market subscriber base. For these companies, original local content is becoming the primary method to drive user engagement and platform retention. As competition heats up, acquiring successful regional content is seen as a faster way to build a library than starting new productions.
Investors tracking the streaming sector should monitor how well these dubbed shows perform on the Netflix platform. A major challenge for OTT services in India is not just acquiring content but ensuring the quality of dubbing and subtitles is high enough to keep viewers engaged. The long-term success of this two-year alliance will depend on whether these regional narratives can successfully cross over to audiences outside of West Bengal. If this partnership proves effective, it may serve as a template for Netflix to collaborate with other niche regional platforms to expand its localized content footprint across different parts of India.
