KKR Picks Up Minority Stake in BookMyShow to Fuel Live Events

Global investment firm KKR has acquired a minority stake in Bigtree Entertainment, the parent company of BookMyShow. The funding will support the growth of its live entertainment division. While BookMyShow is private, the deal highlights rising demand for experiential services, even as the platform faces new competition from rivals like Zomato's 'District'.

On August 19, 2026, global investment firm KKR announced it is acquiring a minority stake in Bigtree Entertainment, the parent company of India’s leading ticketing and entertainment platform, BookMyShow. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the move is aimed at accelerating the company's expansion, particularly in its 'BookMyShow Live' division, which manages concerts, live events, and talent promotion.

BookMyShow, which began as a ticketing service in 2007, has evolved into a full-service entertainment provider. This partnership is expected to combine KKR’s global experience with BookMyShow’s existing industry reach. The fresh capital is focused on scaling up its capability to produce large-scale live events and improve the consumer experience, tapping into the growing Indian trend of prioritizing experiential entertainment over traditional outings.

Financial performance remains a key indicator of the company's stability. For the financial year ended March 2025, BookMyShow reported a net profit of ₹192 crore on a revenue of ₹1,869 crore. This positive bottom line demonstrates the company's ability to operate profitably while scaling, which likely helped attract a global investor like KKR.

It is important for investors to note that BookMyShow is a private company and not listed on stock exchanges. Its largest shareholder is Network18, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, which holds a 39% stake in the firm. Because BookMyShow is private, retail investors cannot buy shares directly, but they can monitor the broader entertainment sector. The entry of new, well-funded platforms such as Zomato’s 'District' app is intensifying competition, which could put pressure on BookMyShow’s future market share and margins.

Investors should also consider that the live entertainment business is highly dependent on consumer discretionary spending. If economic conditions tighten, spending on premium live events is often the first area where consumers cut back. The success of this expansion will depend on BookMyShow's ability to maintain its dominant position against new entrants while managing the costs of hosting and promoting large-scale events.

The key monitorable for market participants will be how the competition between BookMyShow and emerging rivals plays out in terms of user growth and ticket sales. Additionally, investors in listed media companies, particularly Network18, may watch for any updates on how this investment impacts the valuation or strategic direction of their holdings in the entertainment space.
