Strategic Shift to Monthly Subscriptions
JioHotstar will introduce monthly subscription plans across all its tiers beginning January 28, 2026. This recalibration targets evolving Indian viewing habits, particularly the significant shift towards content consumption on connected TVs and a growing demand for flexible payment structures.
The new strategy allows users to choose from monthly, quarterly, or annual subscriptions for its Mobile, Super, and Premium tiers. Monthly pricing starts at an accessible ₹79 for the Mobile tier, rising to ₹149 for Super and ₹299 for Premium. Current subscribers with active auto-renewals will maintain their existing plans and pricing.
Adapting to Large-Screen Growth
This pricing adjustment follows a period of "explosive growth" in large-screen viewing on the platform over the past eleven months. According to company statements, the updated plans are specifically designed to cater to households prioritizing bigger screen experiences, reflecting a broader industry trend.
Sushant Sreeram, head of SVOD Business and chief marketing officer at JioStar, emphasized that the changes align with user behavior. "This update brings greater flexibility and choice across subscription needs, while supporting long-term investments in premium storytelling, the best of live sports, and a high-quality streaming experience at scale for our audiences," Sreeram stated, highlighting the commitment to expanding India's entertainment ecosystem.
Tiered Offerings and Content Access
Under the new framework, new subscribers to the Super and Premium tiers will gain bundled access to Hollywood content. Mobile tier users, however, will need to purchase Hollywood titles via a monthly add-on costing ₹49, or ₹129 quarterly, and ₹399 annually. This modular approach permits customized viewing experiences.
The Mobile tier remains ad-supported, with single-device streaming. The Super tier supports simultaneous viewing on up to two devices, while the Premium tier allows four devices and offers an ad-free experience for most content, excluding live sports and select live programming.
JioHotstar boasts over one billion downloads on Google Play and serves more than 450 million monthly active users, with a content library exceeding 300,000 hours. Industry analysts view this move towards monthly pricing as a critical step in broadening streaming adoption beyond urban centers into diverse family households across India.
