Gen Z Festive Shopping Shift: Ad Budgets Must Pivot to Trust

A new GWI-Snapchat study shows 76% of India’s Gen Z rely on friends and family for shopping confidence, outpacing influencer discovery. This behavioral shift forces advertisers to move away from short-term festive reach campaigns toward continuous, trust-building strategies to secure conversions.

India’s festive shopping season, traditionally defined by short bursts of high-volume marketing, is undergoing a fundamental transformation driven by Gen Z. A study released on August 12, 2026, by GWI and Snapchat, titled 'Diwali & the Festive Season in India,' reveals that while creator-led content is effective for initial product discovery, it is no longer the primary driver of purchase decisions.

The findings highlight a critical disconnect for brands still focusing heavily on broad reach or influencer-led awareness. While 70% of Gen Z consumers use creators to find products, a significant 76% state that immediate feedback from trusted friends and family is what actually gives them the confidence to complete a purchase. For investors and company management teams, this implies that marketing return on investment (ROI) is increasingly tied to a brand's ability to facilitate peer-to-peer trust, rather than just celebrity or influencer visibility.

The Shift in Marketing Strategy

For companies in the FMCG, consumer electronics, and e-commerce sectors, this research signals a change in how festive budgets should be managed. Historically, festive advertising strategies often centered on creating a single, massive wave of excitement around major holidays like Diwali. However, the study suggests that the Gen Z purchase journey is now extended. Approximately 40% of Gen Z begin planning their festive purchases at least a month in advance, and their buying pattern is a mix of planned decisions and spontaneous choices. Brands that fail to maintain continuous engagement throughout the extended festive period risk losing relevance as the market moves away from the 'big shopping weekend' model.

Why Trust Matters More Than Visibility

Advertising platforms that facilitate communication and discussion are gaining an edge. According to the data, 75% of daily Snapchat users in India discuss potential purchases within the platform, and 67% report that this interaction boosts their confidence. This creates a clear distinction for ad spend allocation: platforms that enable private, trusted dialogue may offer better conversion metrics than those limited to passive content consumption.

The risk for brands is clear. If an advertising campaign focuses solely on 'visibility' without a strategy to foster authentic, organic advocacy, it may lead to high ad-spend wastage. As Gen Z increasingly uses private channels for final purchasing validation, brands that do not cultivate communities or peer-sharing incentives may find it harder to convert intent into sales.

Investors monitoring consumer-facing companies should watch for shifts in advertising spend toward platforms that emphasize community and long-term engagement. The next important update for shareholders will be management commentary in upcoming quarterly results regarding changes in marketing efficiency and their approach to digital festive spending, particularly whether they are pivoting from short-term influencer campaigns to sustained, trust-based customer acquisition.
