Excel Entertainment Starts Music Label With Universal Music

Excel Entertainment has launched its own music label, Excel Music, in partnership with Universal Music Group. This follows UMG's recent acquisition of a 30% stake in the production house, valued at Rs 2,400 crore. The label's first project will be the soundtrack for 'Mirzapur: The Movie,' scheduled for a September 2026 theatrical release.

Excel Entertainment has officially entered the music industry with the launch of its dedicated label, Excel Music. This move is a direct outcome of the partnership established earlier this year, when Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired a 30% stake in the Indian production house at an enterprise valuation of Rs 2,400 crore.

Operational Role of Universal Music Group

Under this collaboration, Universal Music Group functions as more than just an investor. The global music giant serves as the strategic shareholder and will handle the marketing and distribution for the new label. For Excel Entertainment, this partnership provides access to UMG’s global distribution network, which may help the production house better monetize its intellectual property. By keeping music production in-house, the company aims to integrate its film and streaming content more closely with its music releases.

Strategic Expansion and Revenue Impact

This expansion into music label operations is a move to create a new revenue stream beyond traditional film production. Production houses in India have historically relied on licensing music to third-party labels. By establishing Excel Music, the company is attempting to retain long-term rights to its soundtracks. The label's first project will be the music for the upcoming theatrical release, 'Mirzapur: The Movie,' which is set to hit cinemas on September 4, 2026. A lead single featuring Haryanvi singer Dhanda is expected to launch this week.

Investor Monitorables

For investors, the success of this move depends on the company's ability to effectively market its music catalogue and achieve sustainable returns from music streaming and licensing. The key monitorable will be whether this integration leads to improved profit margins over time compared to the traditional model of licensing music rights. Additionally, the company's ability to consistently produce successful soundtracks for its own film and streaming projects will determine the long-term viability of the label. Investors may also track how this partnership influences the production house's overall content strategy and whether UMG’s involvement leads to higher global reach for their intellectual property.
