Global advertising giants like WPP, IPG, and Dentsu are struggling amid a major industry shift towards digital and performance-based marketing. Traditional brand-building models are failing, leading to restructuring, layoffs, and mergers. Independent agencies and adtech firms are gaining ground by adapting to new demands for immediate results and creative agility.

The traditional advertising agency world, once dominated by big network creative agencies like Ogilvy, McCann, and Dentsu, is in turmoil. Companies like WPP, the holding company for Ogilvy, are experiencing significant stock value decline and revenue drops, leading to aggressive restructuring, including merging agencies like Grey under Ogilvy. The Interpublic Group (IPG) has undertaken large-scale layoffs as part of a merger with Omnicom Group, which may see iconic agencies disappear. Even Dentsu is selling its international business.
The crisis stems from a fundamental shift from brand-building to performance advertising, where results are measured by conversions rather than long-term brand narratives. Sandeep Bhushan, former India director at Meta, highlights that much of India's digital advertising pie is performance-driven, requiring dozens of creatives daily and a focus on immediate ROI, a model large agencies are ill-equipped to handle. This shift has also led to a talent drain, as creative professionals find more opportunities in independent agencies, content creation, or directly with brands.
Attempts to adapt include integrating adtech capabilities and scaling content studios. However, many clients now work directly with platforms like Google and Meta, bypassing traditional intermediaries. The rise of agile, independent agencies like Moonshot, adept at creating impactful campaigns for new-age brands like Cred and Swiggy, further challenges the established networks. The looming impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adds another layer of complexity to this ongoing transformation.
