JioHotstar's AI-powered animated series, "Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh," has made a significant impact since its launch just over two weeks ago, logging 6.5 million video views on its first day and achieving a reach more than double the platform's average. The 100-episode series, a collaboration between JioStar and Collective Media Network, notably features no traditional human actors in lead roles.
Sushant Sreeram, head of SVOD & CMO at JioStar, highlights AI's role in redefining entertainment, enabling faster experimentation, expanded visual ambition, and dynamic retellings of timeless stories. Vijay Subramaniam, founder and group CEO of Collective Artists Network, emphasizes AI as an enabler, facilitating the digital recreation of vast sets and battlefields, thereby saving considerable time and resources, allowing the creative team to focus on narrative and performance.
Experts suggest AI democratizes content creation by providing powerful tools to more creators. However, the series has also drawn criticism on social media for lacking the emotional depth and authenticity of human performances. Ambika Sharma, founder and chief strategist at Pulp Strategy, notes that while AI art is technically impressive, it's emotionally imperfect, and future advancements in "affective AI" will be crucial for mainstream acceptance. She points out cost efficiencies ranging from 50% to 80%, leading to greater agility and the ability to produce epic-scale content cost-effectively.
Prashant Puri, co-founder & CEO of AdLift (Liqvd Asia), advises treating AI as an amplifier, not a replacement. He explains that AI can analyze audience reactions and refine scenes, but human intuition, cultural understanding, and emotional intelligence are vital. When combined with AI's speed, scale, and data-driven insights, content becomes both efficient and authentic. Subramaniam concludes that AI will foster more inclusive storytelling by removing barriers to creativity.
Impact This development significantly impacts the Indian stock market by showcasing a major innovation from Reliance Industries Limited, a key player in the media and entertainment space. It highlights the potential of AI in content creation, which could lead to cost efficiencies and new revenue streams for the company, potentially boosting investor confidence. The success of this AI-driven series could signal a trend towards more technologically advanced content production, influencing future investments in the sector. Rating: 7/10
