The CBI has arrested an SFIO Deputy Director for allegedly soliciting a ₹1 crore bribe to influence the investigation into the ₹34,000 crore DHFL fraud case. The arrest marks a significant development in the high-profile probe, though investors should note that the DHFL business has already been acquired through the insolvency process.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an official from the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) on charges of corruption linked to the ongoing investigation into the DHFL fraud case. Harish Kumar Tanwar, a Deputy Director at the SFIO, was taken into custody alongside two associates, including a Delhi-based advocate, following a sting operation.
The Corruption Allegations
Investigators allege that the official demanded a bribe of ₹1 crore to influence the outcome of the probe into Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL). According to the investigating agency, the arrest occurred after a bribe installment of ₹20 lakh was allegedly accepted on behalf of the official. The CBI conducted searches at various properties linked to the accused to collect evidence regarding the transaction, marking a setback for the agency's internal probe.
DHFL Context and Investor Meaning
The SFIO has been investigating the ₹34,000 crore bank fraud case associated with DHFL’s former promoters, Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan. The original case centers on allegations that the company created thousands of fake home loan and property loan accounts under a fraudulent branch code to artificially inflate its retail portfolio.
For investors, it is essential to distinguish between this investigative update and the current business operations of the entity. DHFL underwent an insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and was acquired by Piramal Capital & Housing Finance in 2021. As a result, this probe concerns the legacy management and the historical fraud case rather than the current financial health or operations of the business now controlled by the new owners. The investigation remains focused on holding former management accountable and attempting to trace and recover lost funds.
The arrest of an investigative official potentially complicates the administrative side of a major ongoing probe. While the legal proceedings against the accused individuals will continue, the market will monitor whether this event impacts the timeline or credibility of the broader financial fraud investigation as authorities continue to process the multi-layered case.
