SC Records CBI, ED Updates in ₹40,000 Cr ADAG Loan Fraud Case

The Supreme Court of India has formally accepted fresh status reports from the CBI and ED regarding the ongoing ₹40,000 crore loan fraud investigation linked to Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) companies. The court continues to monitor the case but has refrained from interfering in the agencies' investigative strategies. Investors should distinguish this group from other unrelated major corporate entities.

On August 24, 2026, the Supreme Court of India officially accepted the latest status reports from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). These reports are part of a long-running legal inquiry into an alleged ₹40,000 crore bank loan fraud linked to various companies within the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG).

The court’s action comes following a public interest litigation (PIL) that has kept the focus on the group’s past financial dealings. While the agencies are moving ahead with their probe, the Supreme Court has clarified that it will not micromanage the investigation process or dictate the specific strategies that agencies should employ. This decision leaves the operational choices, including decisions on arrests, to the investigators.

Recent updates show that the Enforcement Directorate has continued its enforcement actions. Total asset seizures related to this case have now crossed ₹19,344 crore, which includes a recent freezing of assets worth over ₹3,000 crore specifically linked to the Reliance Communications bank fraud matter. The investigation has already resulted in the filing of multiple chargesheets and prosecution complaints by the agencies involved.

For investors and market observers, it is critical to distinguish this group from other major entities often confused due to naming similarities. Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), for example, is a completely separate corporate house and has no involvement in these ADAG-specific proceedings. RIL continues to operate independently, with market focus remaining on its distinct financial performance and business developments.

The ongoing legal and regulatory scrutiny remains a key monitorable. It highlights the long-standing financial challenges that have impacted the ADAG entities over the years. While the court has not set a specific deadline for the probe, its continued oversight ensures that the agencies remain accountable for the pace of their inquiries. The main focus for observers in the coming months will be further court hearings and any additional updates from the regulators regarding asset recoveries or formal legal charges.
