Rani Kapur Accuses Forgery to Scrap Sona Comstar Family Trust at Delhi HC
Overview

Rani Kapur, mother of the late Sunjay Kapur, has filed a suit in the Delhi High Court seeking the cancellation of the Rani Kapur Family Trust. The trust holds a multi-crore stake in automotive component maker Sona Comstar. Rani alleges the trust was fraudulently created by Sunjay Kapur and his widow, Priya Kapur, to divest her of her entire estate. She claims her dependence after a stroke in 2017 was exploited to transfer assets without her informed consent.

Rani Kapur, the 80-year-old mother of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has initiated legal proceedings in the Delhi High Court to dissolve the Rani Kapur Family Trust. This trust is reported to hold a significant stake, valued in thousands of crores, in the prominent automotive component manufacturer Sona Comstar.

Allegations of Fraudulent Trust Formation

The suit claims the trust was established fraudulently to strip Rani Kapur of her assets and control over the Sona Group of companies. She has identified Priya Kapur, Sunjay Kapur's widow, as the "chief mastermind" behind an alleged conspiracy. According to the filing, Priya Kapur acted rapidly after Sunjay Kapur's death to seize control of key Sona Group entities without notifying Rani Kapur.

Exploitation Following Physical Dependence

Legal documents detail that after Rani Kapur suffered a stroke in 2017, her son Sunjay Kapur and his third wife, Priya Kapur, allegedly exploited her physical vulnerability. They are accused of orchestrating a scheme to transfer all her assets into the RK Family Trust without securing her informed consent. The suit states Rani Kapur was coerced into signing documents, including blank papers, under the guise of administrative convenience.

Discovery Post-Demise

The filing further asserts that a "complex web of illegal transactions" was executed by multiple defendants in collusion with the plaintiff's deceased son, Sunjay Kapur. This allegedly resulted in all of Rani Kapur's assets being vested in the fraudulent RK Family Trust without her knowledge. The full extent of this alleged fraud was reportedly discovered only after Sunjay Kapur's death on June 12, 2025, and the subsequent events that unfolded.

Rani Kapur has named 23 defendants, including Priya Kapur and seven of her grandchildren, two of whom are children of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor. The legal battle is expected to shed light on the intricate financial dealings and control of the Kapur family's extensive assets, particularly impacting Sona Comstar's ownership structure.
