NHRC Launches Probe Into Allegations Against Punjab CM’s Wife

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an inquiry into claims that Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, allegedly sought ₹5 crore to suppress a rape case. The commission has mandated a government report within two weeks. This high-profile development is being monitored for its potential impact on the state's political and governance environment.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has formally initiated an inquiry into serious allegations involving Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The commission took cognizance of the matter following a complaint filed by the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), which referenced claims made by former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Justice Ranjit Singh. The central allegation involves claims that Dr. Gurpreet Kaur allegedly demanded a sum of ₹5 crore to suppress a rape case.

In its directive, the NHRC has instructed the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the Director General of Police (DGP) to carry out a comprehensive inquiry. These state officials have been given a two-week deadline to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR). The findings within this report will be a significant indicator, as they will shape the commission’s subsequent actions regarding this sensitive matter.

To ensure a thorough review, the NHRC has also referred the complaint to the Women Safety Division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. This step effectively brings the matter to the attention of central authorities, highlighting the seriousness with which the commission is treating the allegations. In response to the claims, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur has reportedly issued a legal notice to Justice (retd) Ranjit Singh, indicating an intention to initiate legal proceedings to contest the allegations.

For investors and observers of the regional business climate, such high-profile political and legal developments are often tracked for their potential impact on state-level governance and political stability. While this matter is primarily legal and administrative, prolonged political uncertainty or administrative challenges can sometimes influence the broader sentiment in a state. Maintaining a stable governance environment is generally viewed as important for sustainable business operations and regional economic development.

The most important monitorable in the coming weeks will be the submission of the Action Taken Report by the Punjab government. The outcome of this report and any further developments in the legal proceedings initiated by the parties involved will be key in determining the future direction of this case and its influence on the political environment in Punjab.
