India's Edible Oil Imports Plummet 28%! Is Your Kitchen Budget Next To Feel The Pinch?
Overview

India's vegetable oil imports saw a sharp 28% year-on-year decline to 11.83 lakh tonne in November 2025-26 oil year. This drop, reported by the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA), was primarily due to significantly lower shipments of refined, bleached and deodorised (RBD) palmolein and other palm oil variants, though crude palm oil and canola oil imports saw an increase.

India's Vegetable Oil Imports Decline Sharply in November

India, the world's largest importer of vegetable oils, experienced a significant downturn in its imports during November, the inaugural month of the 2025-26 oil year. Shipments fell by a substantial 28 per cent year-on-year, totaling 11.83 lakh tonne. This marks a considerable decrease from the 16.50 lakh tonne imported in November of the previous year, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA).

The primary driver behind this overall decline was a dramatic reduction in the import of refined, bleached and deodorised (RBD) palmolein, a key processed palm oil derivative. Overall palm oil imports also contracted by 25 per cent to 6.32 lakh tonne, down from 8.42 lakh tonne in the corresponding period last year.

Specific Oil Import Trends

Digging deeper into the data, imports of RBD palmolein plummeted to just 3,500 tonne in November, a stark contrast to the 2.85 lakh tonne imported a year prior. Similarly, crude sunflower oil shipments decreased to 1.42 lakh tonne from 3.40 lakh tonne. Crude soybean oil imports also saw a reduction, falling to 3.70 lakh tonne from 4.07 lakh tonne, and crude palm kernel oil imports dropped to 1,850 tonne from 10,147 tonne.

However, the picture was not entirely negative across all categories. Imports of crude palm oil witnessed a rise, increasing to 6.26 lakh tonne from 5.47 lakh tonne in the year-ago period. Canola oil imports also experienced a surge, climbing to 5,000 tonne from a mere 22 tonne in November 2024.

Non-edible oil imports, which constitute a smaller portion, declined to 32,877 tonne from 37,341 tonne in the previous year.

Supply Sources and Domestic Agriculture

Malaysia and Indonesia remain the principal suppliers of RBD palmolein and crude palm oil to India. In November, Malaysia supplied 3,01,273 tonne of crude palm oil, while Indonesia provided 1,23,456 tonne of crude palm oil and 3,500 tonne of RBD palmolein. For crude soybean degummed oil, India's imports were predominantly from Argentina (2,35,680 tonne), Brazil (50,062 tonne), and China (69,919 tonne). Crude sunflower oil primarily arrived from Russia (74,020 tonne), Argentina (34,933 tonne), and Ukraine (20,000 tonne).

On the domestic front, the sowing of rabi, or winter oilseed crops, showed an uptick. As of December 5, the total area under cultivation increased by 2.40 per cent to 84.14 lakh hectare, compared to 81.75 lakh hectare in the prior year. The area dedicated to rapeseed and mustard seed specifically rose by 3.45 per cent to 79.88 lakh hectare. Despite increased sowing, total edible oil stocks on December 1 stood at 16.23 lakh tonne, slightly lower than the 17.31 lakh tonne held in the preceding month.

Impact

This significant drop in vegetable oil imports could potentially lead to increased domestic prices for edible oils, impacting consumer costs and the margins of food processing companies. It may also influence the profitability of oilseed farmers and edible oil refiners in India. The reduction in imports, coupled with rising domestic sowing, could signal a shift towards greater self-sufficiency or be a response to global price dynamics. The overall impact on inflation could be moderate, depending on domestic production and global supply trends.

Impact Rating: 7/10
