Madhya Pradesh police have arrested four individuals in Narsinghpur for running an interstate cyber fraud ring involving Rs 80 lakh. The gang used mule bank accounts to launder funds from victims across multiple states by promising investment returns via Telegram. This case highlights rising risks in digital transactions and the misuse of banking channels for money laundering.
Madhya Pradesh Police have dismantled an interstate cyber fraud network operating out of the Narsinghpur district, marking a significant development in the ongoing crackdown on digital financial crimes. Law enforcement officials arrested four individuals identified as Shubham Patel, Neeraj Patel, Kailash Rajak, and Hiralal Rajak, following an investigation into approximately Rs 80 lakh of illicit transactions.
The operation is linked to nearly 50 cyber fraud complaints filed by victims across states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Rajasthan, and others. The investigation was initiated after a victim in the Chhatarpur district reported a loss of Rs 28 lakh. The perpetrator had lured the victim with promises of doubling their money by performing online tasks and boosting ratings on the Telegram application.
The gang’s modus operandi relied heavily on the use of 'mule' bank accounts. These are legitimate bank accounts, often belonging to individuals who have rented them out for a fee, which criminals use to channel and launder stolen money. According to police, the gang actively recruited individuals via platforms like Instagram to rent out their accounts. Once the fraudulent funds were deposited, they were rapidly transferred through various accounts before being converted into cryptocurrency. This final step often complicates recovery efforts, as crypto transactions are harder to trace than standard banking transfers.
Authorities have taken several enforcement actions, including the freezing of approximately Rs 1.5 lakh in bank accounts associated with the accused. Investigators also seized mobile phones, ATM cards, and cash from the scene.
For the broader financial ecosystem, this case highlights the systemic risks posed by the proliferation of mule accounts. Banking institutions and regulators have been intensifying efforts to combat the misuse of KYC-compliant accounts for money laundering. As cybercriminals increasingly leverage legitimate banking channels to obscure the movement of stolen funds, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strict control over personal financial credentials. The police investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to track the full extent of the laundered money and identify potential additional suspects connected to the wider network.
