Jharkhand security forces have arrested high-ranking CPI (Maoist) commander Ajay Mahto, who carried a Rs 25 lakh reward. His capture is expected to weaken the insurgent network in Giridih district, where his activities had long hindered regional development and infrastructure projects.
Security forces in Jharkhand have achieved a major breakthrough in their efforts to curb Left Wing Extremism with the arrest of Ajay Mahto, a senior commander of the CPI (Maoist) organization. Mahto, who was a key member of the group’s Special Area Committee, had a bounty of Rs 25 lakh on his head at the time of his capture.
The operation was conducted by a joint team consisting of the Giridih Police and the Central Reserve Police Force. Authorities launched the mission following intelligence reports that placed Mahto within the Harladih forest area in the Giridih district. He was eventually intercepted near Pipradih village as he attempted to evade security personnel. The success of this operation was led by Giridih Superintendent of Police Bimal Kumar and the CoBRA 209 Battalion.
Mahto has been a prominent figure in the extremist landscape for over two decades. Police records indicate he is linked to more than 240 criminal cases, including attacks on security forces and the destruction of public property. His leadership role, particularly in the strategically vital Parasnath region, made him a significant target for law enforcement. Since joining the movement in 2005, his activities frequently disrupted local administration and delayed development projects in the region.
The removal of a commander of this stature is expected to create a leadership void and disrupt the organizational network of the Maoists in Jharkhand.
