Indian Student Arrested in Germany Over US Murder Case

Varun Batchigari, a 20-year-old Indian student, has been arrested in Germany while attempting to travel to India. He faces charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping regarding the death of his 19-year-old girlfriend in Tucson, Arizona. The suspect is now awaiting extradition to the United States to face criminal proceedings.

Varun Batchigari, a 20-year-old Indian national and business analytics student at the University of Arizona, has been taken into custody by German authorities. The arrest occurred while he was in transit, attempting to catch a connecting flight to India. He is accused of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of 19-year-old Julissa Rubi Salazar in Tucson, Arizona.

The incident was reported on August 6, 2026, when the Tucson Fire Department performed a welfare check at Salazar’s apartment. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the victim with visible signs of strangulation and injury. Investigations by local law enforcement suggest that Batchigari left the United States via Tucson International Airport shortly after the event occurred.

The apprehension was the result of direct coordination between the Tucson Police Department, the FBI’s Tucson office, and the FBI Legal Attaché Office in Berlin. Batchigari is currently being held as the extradition process begins. Once completed, he will be transferred back to Arizona, where he is expected to face charges at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex.

Court records and police investigations have highlighted details regarding the suspect's background. Before this incident, Batchigari was involved in an open criminal case in Pima County related to an assault causing injury, filed earlier in May 2026. Furthermore, authorities have alleged that the suspect attempted to conceal the crime by stealing the victim's mobile phone and credit cards, and using the device to impersonate her in text messages to her family.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the charges and the cross-border nature of the investigation. As the legal process unfolds, the key focus for authorities will be the completion of extradition procedures and the formal start of the criminal trial in the United States.
