During the hearing, Weinstein’s legal team, led by Jacob Kaplan, formally requested a reduced sentence. The defense cited multiple chronic health conditions, including blood cancer, diabetes, and heart failure, arguing that a 15-year term effectively amounts to a life sentence given the defendant's current age and medical fragility. A California appeals court had previously overturned a separate 16-year sentence from 2022, citing procedural errors related to how his New York convictions were handled in that jurisdiction. As a result, the California judiciary must now revisit the sentencing for those remaining charges.
