Gujarat High Court Upholds Death Penalty for 38 in 2008 Blasts

The Gujarat High Court has confirmed the death sentences for 38 individuals and life imprisonment for 11 others involved in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts. This ruling follows the dismissal of all appeals filed by the convicts, upholding the 2022 decision of a special court regarding the terror attacks that killed 56 people.

The Gujarat High Court has concluded a major legal proceeding regarding the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts, a series of coordinated terror attacks that shook the city. A division bench consisting of Justice AY Kogje and Justice Samir J Dave confirmed the death penalty for 38 convicts. Additionally, the court upheld the life imprisonment sentences for 11 other individuals involved in the case. By dismissing all appeals filed by the convicted persons, the High Court has effectively maintained the sentences originally handed down by a special court in 2022.

The terror incident, which took place on July 26, 2008, involved multiple bomb explosions across various locations in Ahmedabad, including city hospitals. The attacks resulted in the loss of 56 lives and caused injuries to hundreds of citizens. Responsibility for these acts was claimed by the Indian Mujahideen militant group shortly after the event.

In the initial 2022 verdict, a special court had found 49 out of 77 accused individuals guilty. While 28 people were acquitted of the charges, one individual acted as an approver for the prosecution. The recent High Court judgment reaffirms the legal outcome of this long-standing case, finalizing the judicial response to the criminal proceedings concerning the 2008 explosions.
