Finfluencer P.R. Sundar Denies Harassment Allegations

Financial influencer P.R. Sundar has labeled sexual harassment and criminal intimidation charges against him as a 'witch hunt.' An FIR has been registered by Chennai police following a complaint by a news anchor. As Sundar operates as an individual influencer rather than a listed company, there is no corporate oversight, and the case adds to past controversies involving his regulatory history with SEBI.

Financial influencer P.R. Sundar is facing a police investigation following a complaint of sexual harassment, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation. The Ice House police in Chennai have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Atrocities against Women Act, based on allegations made by a woman news anchor.

The complainant alleged that she was harassed at Sundar’s residence and subsequently confined at his office premises for approximately three hours. In response to these developments, P.R. Sundar has publicly denied all accusations. He characterized the legal action as a 'witch hunt' and alleged that the complaint was orchestrated by a police official, identified as a Superintendent of Police, in retaliation for a long-standing property dispute involving his firm, Mansun Consultancy.

From an investor’s perspective, it is important to note that P.R. Sundar does not operate as a publicly listed company. Consequently, his financial activities and business operations do not fall under the purview of stock exchanges like the NSE or BSE. Unlike listed entities, which are required to maintain high standards of corporate governance, public financial reporting, and transparency, individual finfluencers operate without similar institutional oversight or regulatory accountability.

This is not the first time the influencer has faced regulatory scrutiny. In May 2023, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) took action against him, imposing a fine and a one-year ban from securities trading. The regulator's order was linked to the provision of unregistered investment advisory services. That incident highlighted the risks associated with following financial advice from unregulated individuals, as investors have no recourse to standard grievance redressal mechanisms if financial harm occurs.

The current FIR adds a new layer of complexity to the public perception of the influencer. As the police investigation into the harassment and intimidation allegations continues, the case serves as a reminder of the caution required when engaging with content from influencers who operate outside the established regulatory framework for investment advisors. The investigation remains ongoing, and legal proceedings will determine the veracity of the claims and the counter-allegations made by Sundar regarding the property dispute.
